Product review: Biodegradable waste bags

You probably already know about the issue with plastic pollution, and the many biodegradable alternatives like paper straws, earth-friendly floss picks, and reusable grocery bags. Another way to reduce your use of plastic is to replace your regular pet waste bags with a biodegradable option.

Considering that waste bags are something thrown away regularly, it's a great idea to switch to a biodegradable option to limit your impact on the environment. These bags are designed to break down naturally over time, leading to less landfill waste accumulation.

Pros

  • Better for the environment

  • Cute designs

  • Many brands donate a portion to good causes like pet cancer research

Cons

  • Some brands can be flimsy (leading to breaks and tears)

  • Some brands can be more expensive

  • Not as readily available in stores; You may have to find them online

Cat vs. bee

Last Friday, a massive bee (maybe a wasp?) got into the house somehow, and I couldn't resist swatting at the thing. My mom quickly ushered me inside from the entryway, where she was able to open the front door and allow the bee to escape. It wasn't until a couple hours later when I was solar charging in the sun, and she noticed my paw had some incredible swelling:

Notice the swelling on the right (my left) paw

Even with a swollen paw that looked like a mini boxing glove, I was still pouncing around the house like nothing was wrong.

My mom got in touch with Embrace Pet Insurance, which offers customers a free 24/7 chat for health-related questions. They said as long as I wasn’t limping on it, and I wasn’t displaying any other symptoms, I would be OK and the swelling would go down in about 24 hours. Sure enough, the next morning, my paw was back to its usual adorable size.

Luckily, I didn’t have a severe reaction to the bee sting. But like humans, many cats can have more serious reactions and complications. Keep an eye out for these symptoms if you’re stung by a bee this season:

  • Severe swelling around the head and neck

  • Itchy hives around the body

  • Difficulty breathing or wheezing

  • Excessive drooling

  • Agitation

  • Vomiting or diarrhea

  • Dizziness or disorentation

  • Seizures
