Tip of the week: Keep your nails trimmed

This week, my mom took me in to the vet for my regular nail trim. Though she could do this by herself at home, she takes me in because they're better trained at nail trimming, and it is reimbursed by my pet insurance.

Every time, the vet brings me back out within minutes and tells my mom that I'm a sweet little boy and the best patient they've seen all day. (Of course.)

Here are some reasons why it's a good idea to keep your cat's nails trimmed regularly:

  • Keeping them neatly trimmed will prevent them from getting caught and snagged on things

  • Overgrown nails can grow into cat's paw pad and cause pain and infections

  • Keeping them trimmed will prevent scratches on your hands and furniture

  • It is a much safer and effective alternative to having your cats declawed

  • Long nails can sometimes lead to accidental self-injury. Cats may scratch themselves during grooming or playtime, and overly long nails may cause deep scratches or even punctures, which could lead to an infection.

  • Keeping your cat's nails trimmed will also maintain their comfort and mobility. Extra long, overgrown nails may cause them discomfort when walking or running around, leading to changes in gait or even reluctance to move around at all.

Overgrown nails become curved and don’t retract completely. You will know if your cat’s nails have grown too long if your cat gets their nails stuck in carpets or other soft surfaces, or if your cat can no longer retract her nails.

Severely overgrown and curved nails can grow into the footpad, causing significant pain and mobility problems. Therefore, it is very important to keep your cat’s nails short. Cat should have their nails trimmed every 10 days to 2 weeks so that they do not get to this point.

My mom tried to share my couch while I was trying to take a nap. Big mistake. Spoiler: she always ends up where she belongs—on the floor.
