Why You Should Adopt A Cat

Meow, hello and welcome to my newsletter this week. Today, I wanted to share my personal rescue story and explain why you should adopt a cat rather than buy one from a breeder. Plus, I've got some brand new photos of me to brighten your day!

Let's get right into it!

My rescue story

I was originally found abandoned in a parking lot with my brother, Owen. Soon after we were taken to the shelter, Owen was adopted out to another family, leaving me all by myself.

I lived at the Lincoln County Animal Shelter in Newport, Oregon for months before I was finally adopted. This animal shelter was just a small portable home with a tiny room devoted to cats. However, it has seen some huge improvements since I was there.

On January 4, 2023, just a few days after my 2nd birthday, some people came in to the room in the early afternoon. I instantly hopped off my chair and ran up to the fence, shoving my face through the holes so I could get some lovins. They laughed and took this photo of me, but then kept looking around at the other cats.

The very first photo my mom took of me at the shelter

At first, they looked at these other kittens who were younger than me but not nearly as good-looking. They had some weird cheese names like "Gouda" and "Feta". The problem was, my mom couldn't get two cats, and she didn't want to separate the brothers. Then she looked back at my sweet face, still shoved through the fence staring at her, and she remembered that somebody else had already broken up me and my brother. So she sat down there in front of my cage and filled out all of the paperwork to adopt me that day.

When the shelter staff came back to get me, they shoved me in a temporary cardboard box, and I was later carried out to the car, shaking the box in complete panic. About ten minutes later, my mom opened the box and transferred me into a large pet carrier that I still use to this day.

I couldn’t stop meowing on the way home. I didn't know what was going on! My mom finally pulled me out of the carrier and let me sit on her lap while I stared out the window and watched the world go by. My meows eventually stopped when I realized that I finally had a family—and my freedom!

The first night I had a real bed

When we got home, I was promptly escorted to my own private room, where I stayed for about a week. The first few times I was allowed out around the house ended up in crazy zoomies and a time-out back in my room. Eventually, I was able to gain full access to the house and make this place my kingdom.

Me just napping in my first room

I’m now the complete ruler of the house. I’ve explored nearly every inch of this space. I’ve determined the best napping spots, where my treats are located, and I know exactly where and when I can find the most sunshine.

I get fed quality meats twice a day, along with snacks whenever I beg. I have a collection of mouseys and pillows, my very own pet sitter, and furniture devoted to me. I’m living the good life now!

Happy to have a home

Why you should adopt not shop

There are already many animals in shelters who need a home. Plus, in addition to the fact you're saving a life, adopting a pet is usually much cheaper than buying one. According to Embrace Pet Insurance, a purebred kitten can cost you $500 to $10,000, depending on the breed. Most shelters have a very low adoption fee—my mom only paid $75 for me!

Plus, you're not only saving the life of the pet you adopted. You're also opening up the space at the shelter to another pet in need. Unfortunately, some shelters have too many animals in need of a home and not enough space or foster parents.

Some shelters (like mine) also take care of other issues like spaying/neutering and microchipping, so you won't have to necessarily worry about those costs after adoption. In addition, if you get pet insurance early, you will be able to have most medical expenses covered.
